Wallets and sign-in

Hourglass works with Solana browser wallets that follow the Wallet Standard: Phantom, Solflare and Backpack among them. Your wallet holds your keys and signs every transaction; Hourglass never sees a private key. USB hardware wallets are not offered in the app.

Connect

  1. Open the app and choose Connect wallet in the top right.
  2. Pick your wallet from the list. If the list is empty, install one of the wallets above and reload the page.
  3. Your wallet asks to connect, then asks you to sign a message. The message is a one-time challenge from Hourglass naming this site and the Solana network; signing it costs nothing and moves no funds. It proves you hold the wallet, and starts your session.

A session lasts an hour and survives page reloads: within that hour the app reconnects the same wallet without asking again; after it, you sign a new message. Disconnect in the wallet menu ends the session.

What you need in the wallet

Asset Used for
USDC (SPL, Circle's mint for the network) bids, seller collateral, inspector bonds, lender advances, fault bonds
SOL transaction fees, and the small rent for token accounts the first time you use them (a claim account is about 0.0016 SOL per series)

Keep a few hundredths of a SOL for fees. Every action you take is one transaction.

How an action works

Every button that changes something on chain runs the same five steps, shown on the button as it goes:

  1. Checking… The service checks the action against your account and the market (balances, deadlines, approvals) and shows what it will cost.
  2. Preparing… The service builds the exact transaction.
  3. Sign in your wallet… Your wallet shows the transaction; approve it to sign. Wallets may add their own safety checks to the transaction; that is expected.
  4. Sending… The signed transaction goes to Solana.
  5. Waiting for the chain… The app waits until the transaction is confirmed and the screens are up to date.

If a check fails, the button says why and nothing is sent. Declining in your wallet cancels the action.

Approval comes next

A connected wallet can browse the markets right away. To trade, it must be approved for a role: see Apply and get approved.
